With France’s nerves frayed, a high-speed train derails on a test run, killing seven staff

A French high-speed train crashed into a river during a test run near Strasburg, killing up to seven people, according to Reuters and France 3.

The accident was caused by “excessive speed,” a rail official told AFP. French authorities are on high alert after Paris was attacked by multiple gunmen and suicide bombers, but there is no indication of foul play in the train crash.

The section of TGV track where the crash took place is on the second section of the Paris-Strasbourg high-speed train line, according to Reuters, and is due to open for service in April, 2016.

Rescue personnel, including teams of police divers, are on the scene.
