Magnitude 6.7 earthquake near Japan triggered a small tsunami

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake has struck off the south-western coast of Japan, according to the US Geological Survey. The quake occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers.

No immediate reports of casualties or damage have been reported.

The Japan Meteorological Agency had issued a tsunami warning. After a small tsunami was registered on the southern Nakanoshima island, the warning was called off.

In 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami hit Japan killing more than 18,000 people. Memories of that terrible event remain fresh in people’s minds.
